The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People – Habit One

Last month, one of our team members went along to the three day workshop for Franklin Covey’s 7 habits of Highly Effective People.

Renowned as the world’s premier personal leadership development solution, this workshop aligns timeless principles of effectiveness with modern technology and practices. Each month, we will be sharing a recap of one of the seven habits.

Habit 1 - Be Proactive

Being proactive is more than just thinking about things before they happen, it means that you are concentrating your time and energy on things that you can change or influence instead of things you cannot. It is common for people to resign themselves to worrying about things in life that they can do nothing about. For example, your birthday party is coming up, but the weather is a factor in outdoor activities. It might rain, it might snow, it might hail, it might, it might. You’re right, it might do a lot of things but can you do anything to change the weather?

So think about this, what about spending time thinking about alternative venues or activities IF the rain or the weather comes into play. You can do something about what you choose to do on that day, you cannot do anything about the weather.

Focus on your circle of Influence, and not your Circle of Concern. The Weather is a concern, but you cannot change it. The Venue and Activity is something that can be influenced.
